Why the 50+ Athlete Shouldn’t Eat Round the Clock

Why the 50+ Athlete Shouldn’t Eat Round the Clock
If you don’t eat before working out doesn’t mean you are running on an empty tank

If you’re north of 50, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane to the 70s and 80s.

Remember Singapore back then? No 24-hour convenience stores on every corner. No bubble tea shops lines wrapping around the block. There were maybe one or two McDonald’s or KFC outlets in the entire country.

Back then, you ate what your mum cooked. Three meals a day. That was it. No snacking, no grazing, and there damn sure weren't bags of chips or nachos lurking in the kitchen cabinets. We survived, we played hard, and we stayed lean.

Fast forward to today. Look around. Snacking hasn't just become common—it’s become a mindless, round-the-clock habit. We’re drowning in convenience, and our health is paying the price.

I used to be a victim of this modern, over-fed lifestyle too. But around 2016, I woke up and discovered Time-Restricted Eating (TRE).

Let’s get one thing straight before the "Fasting Police" come out of the woodwork: put away your handcuffs, yah?

What I practice isn't a textbook, water-only pure fast. It’s Time-Restricted Eating. Most days, I consume my food within a tight 1 to 2-hour window. Outside of that window, I take specific supplements that carry a negligible amount of calories. It’s about restriction and discipline, not dogmatic perfection.

Think of it like this: you fuel hard in a focused window, and then you slam a heavy steel vault shut at the entry of your stomach. Once that vault is locked, zero calories get through.

Why should an active, older athlete care? Because constant grazing is keeping you soft, inflamed, and tired. When you lock the vault, you unlock the savage within. Here’s why:

Crushing Inflammation: Constant eating keeps your digestive tract in overdrive and spikes systemic inflammation. TRE gives your body the system-reboot it needs to heal aching joints and recovering muscles.

Weaponizing Metabolic Flexibility: Most guys our age can only burn carbs for fuel. When the carbs run out, they crash. By restricting your eating window, you teach your body to flip the switch and burn stored fat for fuel. You become an efficient, dual-fuel engine.

Unbreakable Focus (Neuroplasticity): I don’t do midday crashes at work anymore. Brain fog? Gone. When you aren't redirecting all your blood flow to digest a heavy lunch, your brain stays sharp, wired, and alert.

Circadian Alignment: Believe it or not, your body thrives on routine. Eating at the same focused time every day aligns your internal clock, leading to deeper sleep and better hormonal balance.

Autophagy: The ultimate cellular clean-up. When you stop feeding the machine constantly, your body starts clearing out the old, damaged cellular junk. It’s a biological fountain of youth.

The Savage Blueprint: What Works for Me

  • The Morning Kickstart: I start my day with EPA fish oils combined with MCT oil, alongside a healthy dose of Essential Amino Acids (EAAs). I’ll take another round of EAAs midday to keep muscle protein synthesis protected.
  • Hydration & Minerals: No generic sports drinks. In the morning, I drink water mixed with Baja Gold sea salt. Throughout the day, I sip on high-quality electrolytes to keep my performance and hydration locked in.
  • The One Meal (OMAD): When the vault opens, I eat a massive, nutrient-dense meal. I keep it strictly animal-based—high-quality protein and fats that actually fuel a 50+ athlete.
  • The Heavy Training Pivot: On high-output, heavy training days, I adapt. I’ll take a protein shake with EAAs immediately post-workout to kickstart recovery, and then I’ll still enjoy my big, animal-based feast in the evening.
  • Every single weekday meal is self-cooked. No seed oils, no hidden sugars, and no processed garbage. I use Redmond real salt as my only condiment, and everything gets fired up in my trustworthy Ninja grill. Clean, primal, and efficient.

The Bottom Line

Stopping the clock on aging doesn't happen by accident. It happens by discipline.

If you’re over 50 and still eating like a bored teenager—snacking from morning to night—you are leaving performance, mental clarity, and longevity on the table. Your body wasn’t designed to process fuel 24/7. It was designed to hunt, feast, and then rest.

Stop letting convenience dictate your waistline and your energy levels. Step up, discipline your mind, and lock the vault.

Eat with purpose
